The 3 things you NEED to know about petrol in diesel!

AdBlue In your Fuel

Throughout Rutland we have seen progressively more occurrences of AdBlue contamination wherein a person has put AdBlue directly into their diesel tank. This is mainly caused by people not knowing the way to use it (please note: it is in fact not a fuel additive), and to some extent simply because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are typically directly near to each other on the vehicle.

So, exactly what is the situation with putting AdBlue in a diesel car?

As AdBlue is predominantly ionised water, it is actually like pouring water in your tank. Diesel and water do not ever mix at all and attempting to run a diesel car on water isn't going to work. In addition to this, the urea is quite corrosive to fuel system pipes and seals and is at risk of crystallisation, clogging injectors and fuel filters. In the case you have put AdBlue into a fuel tank remove it as quickly as possible. And most definitely be careful not to start up the motor - not even to shift it from the pump. Assuming you did start the vehicle you would probably need to have the full fuel system purged and filters replaced.

Any time you end up in this situation don’t panic! Contact us, the UK’s Premium fuel contamination company. Our engineers have got the practical know-how and working experience to have you back on your way swiftly and efficiently, no mess, no hassle.

Wrong Fuel in Car Rutland - Petrol in Diesel Car Wardley

It can't be nice conking out in a car running on the wrong fuel on the road. We had a customer who filled her diesel car with petrol (father's Ford Galaxie) in Wardley had literally this kind of dilemma: "WrongFuelSOS.com's technician helped me remove my motor from the live lane. He removed the wrong fuel from it and had it running once more after only thirty-five minutes. Highly recommended."

Wrong Fuel Doctor Wardley - Fuel Rescue Wardley

This really was an unsociable hour to be on the road. It was roughly 2:30am and hardly anyone was about. It had been fairly dead thus far, and me and Ray were sitting about looking through a few old magazines. It was an uncommon tranquil time in Rutland. Actually it was indeed that tranquil that the moment the telephone ultimately rang it made me jump! The motorist on the phone stated: "I ended my evening shift and stupidly put the wrong fuel in a husband's Honda Accord". We asked him to inform us where exactly he was situated and we hit the road, ending up in Wardley not as much as an hour or so later. The contaminated fuel was removed from the motor and he thanked us for getting there so quickly. While we were heading back to the depot we found two girls at the side of the road who appeared to have a puncture. Obviously we pulled over to change it, to their delight.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
